Improvements to the AdSense panel and ListPages module

We've added a visual guide and useful tips for predefined placements of AdSense units to help you choose the best Adsense unit(s) for your wiki.

small.jpg

Due to popular demand we've added two highly requested new AdSense unit placements: floating left and floating right.

If you do not want to use any of the predefined locations, you can easily put AdSense units in your wiki pages using our new template system. You can create an ad unit with "Custom label for manual placement" and simply put it into a _template page for a given category. This will allow you to include and change custom ad placements across an entire category instead of page by page. If you are unfamiliar with templates, you can find more details on the templates documentation page.

The ListPages module is getting more and more popular and people have started using it in many different and interesting ways: blogging, news pages, even issue trackers. We are getting a lot of positive feedback about it.

Following your suggestions, we have added a new "magical tag" that allows you to select pages with similar tags as the current page. Simply include the wiki syntax below in any page and you will get a list of pages that share tags with the page the module is placed in.

+ Similar pages
[[module ListPages tags="="]]

Of course you can add other options to customize page selection or formatting — see the ListPages module documentation for more details.

The last thing we wanted to mention is… you can now comment on documentation pages!. We enabled comments in our documentation, weeks ago to give you another way to tell us what were doing right — and what we're doing wrong. The comments section is also a great way to point out errors in the documentation so that they can be fixed quickly.

Good luck!

In my wikis, the ads appears only on the main page: is it supposed to be like this or I made a mistake?
How can I put the ads on every page?

I love the similar pages tag! Thanks.

A random tag would be nice too.

TheBlog: ads are only displayed on pages which are not too short. Displaying them on short pages would be not effective (and would lower the $$ per click factor). Hope this helps.

Gabrys: thanks a lot for explaining, now I understand perfectly.

Is there a way to manually float custom modules?

Alternatively, it would be nice to set those floating ads by category. I don't want it in my default/non-category, but I do want them in my news category.

Also, FYI, if you display a floater on a page where a tab box is, the tab box will cover part of the ad. The tabs at the top themselves move in the correct direction, but the tab content area doesn't. Or, at least, it didn't for me when I tested it briefly last night.

fortunzfavor: if you want custom ads placements set per category, see this article: http://www.wikidot.com/doc:adsense-and-templates

I guess I could use div to make them float. I saw a snippet somewhere that did that with image captions.

you're right if you want to have them in the whole category use div float AND _template. :)

I just noticed that you can order ListPages by Page rating now. That's new too, right?

Yes, it's documented on the module documentation page

I really wish the list pages module could list all pages with no parent…it would be so useful (well for me)

DaveC: do you know:

(scroll-down to page options) -> site tools -> orphaned pages?

Unfortunately the Orphaned pages function does not list any pages without a parent page. I run my whole wiki on a parent child page relationship starting with 4 main areas (this way I can add areas easily), I then parent my pages of one of those 4 areas, each of which can have other sections.

e.g. I might have page structures such as maintenance»gaggia»brew pressure or maintenance»Izzo Vivi»brew pressure

Sometimes though pages don't get parented and it's hard to find them….

I wanted something in sitemap (module pagetree) as well that would allow drag and drop of the parent pages structure, again incredibly handy when reorganising stuff, especially as the module pagetree command again doesn't list pages with no parent…it hence becomes very difficult to actually find pages with no parent, unless someone can think of a clever way of doing it.

Re: similar tags improvement
David MarseillesDavid Marseilles 1216400472|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

It would be nice if the "=" tag would sort which pages have the most tags in common first, and THEN sort by date.

I run a gaming blog, and would like to continue to use genre, game, story type as my tagging system, but that tends to make there be no stories in the similar tags mix that match that game. If it FIRST listed stories that had 4 tags in common, then 3, then 2, with each grouping still ordered by date, it would make the similar tags setup more potent, and more likely to keep people on a site since there's more there relevant to their interests.

I like this. Would there be any chance of creating a parameter for a random fact?
